DIY Scary Monster!
Here’s a great way to spend a rainy day making your own fire breathing dragon. You can use the empty tube from the middle of a toilet or kitchen roll.
To build your fire breathing dragon, you will need:
• Pair of scissors (preferably with rounded ends)
• Glue stick
• Glue gun or double sided sticky pads
• 1 square of thin coloured card
• 2 pom poms (2.5cm)
• 2 pom poms (1cm)
• 2 googly eyes (1.5cm)
• 3 scraps of tissue paper (red, yellow and orange)
Top Tip
Why not use your colouring pens to add extra features to your design, like scales, teeth or a mouth?
Experiment
Try blowing softly through the tube. Why do the flames move?
What is the lightest breath it takes to make the flames move? What is the longest you can keep the flames moving?
How do the flames behave if you blow harder? What’s the longest you can keep the flames moving now?
How does blowing softly and blowing hard relate to playing long and short notes on your harmonica?
How does blowing softly and blowing hard relate to playing loudly and quietly on your harmonica?
Can you move the flames by breathing in too? If so, how does this relate to your harmonica?
And here’s another great use for your fire breathing dragon
Breath control is a great way of calming ourselves down if we get angry or anxious. Next time you feel stressed, blow three long, gentle breaths through your dragon and feel yourself calming down.
