1:1 tuition
Sometimes parents/carers request 1:1 tuition for their children. We are happy to organise this according to your school’s criteria. Some schools specify a set teaching rate, including room hire, which we have to follow. Usually, however, our own rates apply and lessons are payable half termly in advance against our invoice. Our 1:1 rates are:
•  30 minutes – £22.50 total per session
•  45 minutes – £30.00 total per session
•  60 minutes – £40.00 total per session

Paired tuition
We are also happy to organise private paired tuition, usually for siblings. Again, your school’s criteria may involve a set teaching rate, including room hire, which we have to follow. Where our own rates apply, lessons are payable half termly in advance against our invoice. Our paired lessons rates are:
•  30 minutes – £15.00 per student per shared session
•  45 minutes – £22.50 per student per shared session
•  60 minutes – £27.50 per student per shared session

Credit/Debit Card Payments
When making a credit/debit card payment through our Store, please add your child’s name to the PayPal contact address to help us reconcile your payment. There is no need to log in when paying through our website.

Music Pack
You should also budget a one-off cost of £29.99 for your music pack. This comprises a Tuff folder, a 4 hole and a 10 hole harmonica, your first music book with CD, music diary, pen and stickers. Further details are in our web Store here. If you provide your own kit, please note that Key Stage 2 children will still need to order a 10 hole Airwave harmonica to participate in our sessions.

Free First Lesson Free
When you join Harp Academy your very first lesson is always free. You can opt for a taster session before subscribing, or else sign up straight away and we will credit you the value of your first lesson. Either way, we provide a 4 hole starter harmonica and music sheet to get you going and the tuition for your first session is free of charge.

If you decide not to continue, you keep the harmonica with our compliments. If you do decide to continue, you keep the harmonica, but you will need to pay for our ongoing sessions in advance and invest in a Music Pack (see above). Please also note that while Key Stage 1 students continue to use the free starter harmonica after their taster, Key Stage 2 students will need to order one of our 10 hole Airwave harmonicas to participate in further sessions.

Budgeting For Lessons

The bigger picture

Harp Academy normally runs 10 half-hourly lessons each term (autumn, spring and summer), with a mid-term break. That’s 30 half-hourly lessons each academic year. We also offer opportunities for performance experience, playing in assembly and in public at the end of each term. Longer sessions can also be provided for certain schools on request.

Matthew NHLHow much are lessons?
Lesson fees for our half-hourly sessions cover the cost of our classroom sessions, plus access to Harp Academy’s extensive library of on-line support material. For parents who like to budget monthly, the cost is £18.75 per month in advance, in 12 instalments August-July. For parents who prefer to pay termly in advance, the cost is £71.50. For schools offering sessions of more than half and hour, a bespoke price is normally agreed.

HA Promo 3cPrice comparison
Private piano lessons at home cost from £130.00 per half-term. General group music lessons at School, through Brighton & Hove Music And Arts (BHMA), cost from £84.60 per child per term, with additional instrument hire from £35.00 per term per child. This makes Harp Academy a budget-friendly option.

Music Class 5

Siblings
We offer a discount on lesson fees for a additional siblings. While your first child pays the full rate, additional siblings are awarded a discount equivalent to £10.00 per term. It is also possible to share music books, which helps to reduce the cost of equipment, however we often find that children prefer to have their own kit.

All lessons must be paid for in advance. Payment can be made either by monthly instalments, or termly in full. Monthly payment is by standing order. Termly payment is by bank transfer, personal cheque or PayPal transaction. Further details are on our How To Pay page.

Signing Up

How do I sign up for Harp Academy?

Simply click the Golden Harmonica to register your interest. We will then contact you and run through the options available. In principle, these involve a one-off taster session to check that you’re completely happy before committing, or else subscribing to a term with your first lesson free of charge.

KS2 Harp Boy 3For many newcomers, Harp Academy is their first experience of learning a musical instrument. It may also be their first extra-curricular activity. When this is the case, we recommend a taster session to begin with. This allows them to meet their Harp Academy teacher and see how everything works. Alternatively, where newstarters already have a sibling or friend who has enrolled in Harp Academy, it may make more sense to sign up straight away.

Either way, take a moment to read our Terms & Conditions. They’re not extensive, so it only takes a moment. They will help you gain a clearer idea of how Harp Academy operates and will probably answer many of your questions.

Folders 3Music Packs
Once you’re ready to subscribe in full, you’ll need a Music Pack. This is available from our Web Store. Your Music Pack is a one-off investment. It contains everything your child will need for their harmonica lessons and it’s theirs to keep. They should bring their pack to every lesson. It’s a good idea to write their name on all the contents, as well as the Tuff zip folder itself.

You’ll also need to pay for the lessons themselves. Our How To Pay page explains what to do, with options for termly or monthly subscriptions. Please note that tuition payment is always made in advance, but you can cancel your subscription at any time. All we ask is a month’s notice period so that we can make adjustments and recruit a replacement for our group.

The same goes for our My School menu, where you can check lesson dates and other useful information. Our Key Stage and Harp QI menus have protected content however, which supports our classroom learning. Access to these pages is for Subscribers only. Our subscriber log-in code can be found in our Music Diaries and Music packs.

Tuff Folder
Starter Packs are issued in a durable A4 Tuff zipper folder to keep all your equipment and music together. Children should bring their pack to each lesson. The pack contents are listed above, and may include added harmonica promotional give-aways, such as stickers and catalogues, when available.

Music Diary
This is the essential piece of kit for all Harp Academy students. It’s where we record your mission at the end of each lesson and students must bring it along each week. It’s also where parents can check their child’s progress and add their own message for their Harp Academy teacher. If a Music Diary is lost or completed, a new one should be ordered to ensure continuity of learning. Your Music Diary gives essential information regarding our behaviour for lessons, practise tips and guide to registering on the Harp Academy website. There is also space for song composition and music games for rainy days, such as Word Search. Music Diaries are a vital link between Harp Academy and parents.

4 hole harmonica*
The 4 hole Hohner Speedy harmonica is ideal for getting started on the harmonica. It has the eight notes of the C Major scale and wider hole spacing for easy navigation. Colour options are Black, Blue, Pink or Yellow (subject to availability) and your first musical exercise is printed right on top, where it can’t be lost.

If you have a Free Taster Session, we will bring your 4 hole harmonica to School with your lanyard attached. When you order your Music Pack, simply add the Speedy and lanyard to your folder and bring everything to each lesson. We do not include a second Speedy harmonica in your Music Pack.

Lanyard*
Your Harp Academy lanyard is for attaching to your 4 hole Speedy harmonica to prevent the harmonica from being dropped. The lanyard comes with a standard quick release safety clasp. Again, we normally issue a lanyard at your Free Taster Session, attached to your 4 hole Speedy harmonica. You can keep your 4 hole taster harmonica and lanyard with your music pack when it arrives; we do not include a second lanyard in your Music Pack pack.

Suzuki Airwave10 hole harmonica
By the end of Y2, children are usually keen to graduate to their first 10 hole harmonica. We use the Suzuki Airwave as this is a sturdy, well-engineered instrument, with familiar wide hole spacing for early learners. The additional channels facilitate a wider range of repertoire, technique development and spacial awareness. This provides a good foundation for progress towards a standard metal 10 hole harp. Colour options are Orange, Red or Blue.

Silver Star10 hole harmonica**
For KS3 and more confident KS2 players, we can provide a Hohner Silver Star metal harmonica instead of the Suzuki Airwave. There is no extra cost and the note arrangement is exactly the same. Children will benefit from fast-tracking their embouchure development and adopting a ‘grown up’ harmonica sooner.

Harp Map 10h iHarmonica Map
Our harmonica maps for 4 hole and 10 hole harmonica are the ideal reference guide for understanding the layout of the diatonic harmonica. Each map comes in two parts. Firstly, a colour coded block chart mapping blow notes, draw notes, standard bends and overbends. Secondly, a more detailed diagram, showing note names and their respective positions.

Harp Academy Pen
A handy item for making notes and writing in your Music Diary, we recommend you your Harp Academy pen in your Music Pack. Harp Academy pens write in black ink.

Stickers
We will include a harmonica sticker for you to enjoy, dependent on supplies from harmonica trade manufacturers such as Hohner and Suzuki.
